Euro 2021 Power Rankings: Part II

We have seen the top five teams that will battle it out in the upcoming iteration of UEFA Euro 2021. What about the next five? Let’s see their recent form and what potential they will carry in UEFA Euro 2021. Check out Euro 2021 Power Rankings: Part I before you read the following.

 

6). Spain (Up by 4 rankings)

The first matchday of the World Cup qualifiers saw Spain drawing against Greece with a measly 1-1. Greece converted their only shot on goal through Anastasios Bakasetas through the penalty spot. However, the second game for the Spanish side saw them cruising towards a fine victory against Georgia.

The first and most intriguing performance of the outing came against Kosovo in their third game. Spain had 24 shots compared to Kosovo’s three. With more than 80% possession and around 1000 passes, Luis Enrique’s men were all over the Kosovo team.

Dani Olmo, the Leipzig defender, opened the scoring for the Spanish side. Later in the game, Ferran Torres doubled the lead with a subliminal finish. Kosovo’s Besar Halimi pulled one back only to be cancelled out by Gerard Moreno. Luis Enrique was full of praises for his team and showed confidence for the upcoming matches.

 

7). Portugal (down by 1 ranking)

With two wins out of a possible three, the Portuguese team looks the most dangerous on paper for the Euro competition and World Cup. With a front three of Bruno Fernandes, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Andre Silva, the three forwards have more than 80 goals and 20 assists in their domestic clubs.

After winning the first game against Azerbaijan by a measly 1-0 and drawing their second game against Serbia by 2-2, the Portuguese team went all guns blazing in their third game against Luxembourg.

Luxembourg took the lead at the half-hour mark through Gerson Rodrigues. They held on to it till half-time when Diogo Jota equalized two minutes into the injury time. Portugal scored two more due to the hefty contributions of Cristiano Ronaldo and João Palhinha.

Fernando Santos, the Portuguese manager, told the media that we took the first thirty minutes of the game as a friendly game. However, after we conceded the goal, we had to come back, and we did.

 

8). Germany (down by 6 rankings)

Germany’s three games in the World Cup qualifiers have seen the team winning two and losing one. The first game against Iceland came with a relatively comfortable victory. With goals from Havertz, Goretzka, and Gündoğan, Germany got three points to their name. The second game, away to Romania, saw them win the game with a goal by Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry.

It was until the third game that the Germans derailed from their actual form. They fell short by one goal and slumped into a 2-1 home defeat by North Macedonia. The fans and the German media criticized Chelsea forward Timo Werner for missing a sitter late in the game.

However, the real question is, does it mean the end of Joachim Löw as a manager of the German National Team? There are rumours about Hansi Flick taking over as the coach after getting sacked by Bayern Munich.

 

9). Turkey (down by 4 rankings)

The Turkish national team is in the form of their life. With three games played, they have not lost a single game. Their first impressive win came against the Netherlands by 4-2, in which Burak Yılmaz bagged a hattrick. The second game, away to Norway, saw them winning by a comfortable margin of 3-0.

Things took a slight turn as their winning form was disrupted by the Latvian side. The Turkish team ended the game with 3-3 on the score sheet in an evenly-sided match. It was a perplexing situation for both sides, and the energy didn’t seem to be there. Turkish manager, Şenol Güneş, admitted that his team played too slow and did not press well enough.

 

10). Switzerland (up by 1 ranking)

Three games, three wins! The Swiss side has managed to clinch three straight victories in their first three games of the World Cup qualifiers. The first two wins came against Bulgaria and Lithuania. However, the third game ended in a tight contest of 3-2 in favour of Switzerland.

In a game that could have been won by easy margins by Switzerland, the Finnish team was lucky to convert both chances they had on goal.  Vladimir Petković, the Swiss manager, reiterated that they will be looking to go all guns blazing against their remaining games of World Cup qualifiers and UEFA Euro 2021.

 

 

Final Words

There are some teams in the top 10 that have surprised us due to their rankings. It may not come as a surprise, but we are about to witness some of the hottest footballing actions in UEFA Euro 2021. The fans are excited, and we’re waiting to see what unfolds. However, with the global pandemic of Covid-19, we do not know whether the Fate of UEFA Euro 2021 will be successfully run, or not.
