RCD Mallorca – How Will They Perform in Spanish Top Tier In 2021/22?

Introduction

Los Bermellones, after their foundation in 1916, have played their home games at Son Moix that has a total capacity of hosting more than 23,000 fans. In the Balearic Islands, the club has its headquarters in Palma. RCD Mallorca had its peak in the years of late 1990s and then in the early 2000s. In these years, the club reached its best-ever 3rd place in Spanish top tier in 1999, and then in 2001. It also won Copa del Rey in 2003, following two previous final defeats in 1991 and 1998. RCD Mallorca has also won Supercopa in 1998 and reached the final of the 1999 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. RCD Mallorca has traditionally played in red shirts with black shorts and socks.

 

Team’s Performance in Last Year’s Competition

RCD Mallorca wasn’t a part of the Spanish top tier last season, as it earned its promotion by finishing second in the second division of Spanish football. They were known to be a tough team to beat in their campaign, as they lost just eight matches and conceded only 28 goals in 42 games.

The club ended its campaign with a goal difference of +26 and equal on the points with the division winners – RCD Espanyol. Club’s success in their Segunda campaign relied mainly on its defenders and defence structure, making it very difficult for opposition teams to break.

Challenges They Face This Year

While it was not easy for Mallorca to earn the promotion last year, the top tier offers an entirely different challenge altogether. For example, it is tough for a newly promoted team to keep up with other teams’ finances, and it makes good signings difficult for newly promoted clubs. The first season after the promotion to the first tier is always the most challenging season for clubs.

Furthermore, the squad of RCD Mallorca lacks the experience at the top level, even after making some good loan signings. They would need a lot of effort from all players to keep up with the top tier’s pace and finish at a respectable position.

Players To Watch

All eyes will be on Real Madrid’s loanee – Takefusa Kubo. His previous loan spells at various clubs have shown that he is not just a world-class player but a world-beater, and it must have been in the heads of RCD Mallorca’s management when they approached Real Madrid for his loan.

Another player to watch in this club would be Dani Rodriguez, who is not just a commanding midfielder but also has an excellent eye for goal. He is a veteran at this level, and he is not new to the top tier of Spanish football so that he will be a crucial asset for Los Bermellones.

 

Manager’s CV

Luis García’s coaching career started in 2001 with amateurs UD Altea. Villajoyosa CF, a third-tier team in the Valencian Community, was his next stop, and he stayed there for two more seasons. After one year with former club Benidorm, García was appointed as a manager of Levante UD and helped them return to the top tier in Spanish football after a gap of three years. In the following campaign, his team finished the league at 14th place.

García then had stints out of Spain and returned to Villarreal in 2018, following the sacking of Javier Calleja. A month into his tenure, he was stripped of his duties since he failed to win a single race.

RCD Mallorca manager Vicente Moreno will be replaced by García on 6 August 2020. The next year, he guided his club to the top of the league. He prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation, which has allowed him to find a good balance between the attack and defence of his teams.

As for any other team, things will go tough for RCD Mallorca this season, also because it is their first season after promotion in the first tier, but mainly because other teams have strengthened their squads.
