Valencia CF – How Will They Perform in Spanish Top Tier In 2021/22?
Once a Spanish football giant and now striving for European football, Valencia CF is a club known to every football fan worldwide. Traditionally in white shirts and black shorts, Los murciélagos made their comeback to the top tier of Spanish football in 1987 after being relegated a season before, in 1986. Ever since then, they have won 2 Spanish football league titles and have gone on to win Copa del Rey, UEFA Cup, UEFA super cup, and losing a UEFA champions league final.
However, it was between 1999 to 2004 where all these trophies were won, and Valencia has struggled ever since then to win the bigger prizes in Spanish and European football. Playing in one of the biggest stadiums in Spain, Mestalla, Valencia enjoys a crowd capacity of over 55,000 fans, which tells the story of once a Spanish giant.
In this article, we will take a look at Valencia’s last years’ performance in the Spanish top tier and what is expected of them in the current season 2021/22. We will also look at players to watch in this season and the desired position of Valencia CF in the table once the season ends.
Team’s Performance in Last Year’s Competition
Valencia finished 13th in last seasons’ competition, and while they were one of the top-scoring sides, their defence wasn’t a good sight to watch. In the end, they had a goal differential of -3 after scoring 50 goals and conceding 53. Carlos Soler was their top scorer, with 11 goals, followed by Max Gomes, who netted seven goals.
It wasn’t a successful season for Valencia CF. However, some may argue that it was an achievement for them to survive in the competition, as some of the clubs’ more prominent names left the club along with the manager, owing to the financial crisis at the club.
It is a slightly new and younger squad of Valencia CF, as some senior players, with Dani Parejo, left the club a season before last. However, they still have some names that we are used to seeing in Valencia’s squad – such as Jose Gaya, Carlos Soler, Denis Cheryshev, etc.
This is the first team squad of Valencia CF for the season 2021-22:
|GK – Jaume Doménech||DF – Toni Lato||DF – Hugo Guillamón|
|MF – Carlos Soler||MF – Rubén Sobrino||DF – José Gayà(C)|
|MF – Álex Blanco||FWD – Manu Vallejo||MF – Jason|
|GK – Cristian Rivero||DF- Thierry Correia||FWD – Gonçalo Guedes|
|FWD – Marcos André||DF – Gabriel Paulista||MF – Yunus Musah|
|MF – Uroš Račić||FWD – Maxi Gómez||DF – Mouctar Diakhaby|
|GK – Jasper Cillessen||DF – Omar Alderete||MF – Denis Cheryshev|
|MF – Daniel Wass||DF – Cristiano Piccini||GK – Giorgi Mamardashvili|
Challenges They Face This Year
Valencia was a permanent part of the league’s upper half before they were hit with the economic crisis two seasons ago. They finished 4th in the 2018-19 season and the season before that. However, their league position in the last two seasons hasn’t been up to the mark, and they indeed would be looking to finish in the upper half of the table this season.
However, even with the new ownership of Peter Lim, the club isn’t completely back on its solid financial feet and wasn’t able to sign any big names before the current season. It remains to be seen where the club will finish this year, but a finish in the top half of the table will be a success.
Players To Watch
In the last season and before that, Carlos Soler and Daniel Wass have been playing exhilarating football. They have been scoring goals and playing very attacking football with intent and are the players to watch for this season.
Moreover, Jose Gaya has been a solid customer down the left-back for Valencia and has led the team for the past few years. How he plays this season will also define how Valencia plays and where they will end in the table. This season, young American prospect Yunus Musah and Portuguese forward Gonçalo Guedes will look for other names to look for in this season.
Marcelinho was a manager from the top draw across the top 5 European leagues, but his sack back in 2019 changed how Valencia operated in the league. It is essential to know here that he was sacked right after winning the Copa del Rey, and it sent shockwaves across European football.
After his departure, Valencia has changed managers three times in two years and has now stuck with Jose Bordalas. Bordalas is not known for all the good reasons in football management and is often labelled anti-football. His teams have earned more cards than any other team, and things don’t seem to be changing for him at Valencia.
He prefers a 4-4-2 formation, with two wide midfielders also tracking back when it is required. However, in football, it is not about how you win – just that you do. If Bordalas can bring a winning structure at the club, fans won’t mind how he does it.
Predicted Finish in League Table
Valencia will be working hard this season to finish in the top half of the league. However, other teams targeting the top half of the table have also strengthened their squads in this transfer window, and it will be an uphill task for Valencia to finish at the desired 8th or 9th position.
However, with a pragmatic manager, and a very young and talented team, it seems that they will be successful in their quest. If Bordalas can get Maxi Gomez and Carlos Soler to score often, Valencia will be a tough team to beat this season.
